carebear asked:
I bought a bin. And I keep putting raw food, eggshells, and cardboard rolls from toliet tissue in there. But it all just seems to still be there. Am I doing something wrong? I would really appreciate the help as I am really trying to make a go of this.

It takes about 8 months. I found this fab site for you.
Good luck
‘Compost activators may be added to speed up the breaking down process. They can be purchased in liquid form or can be made at home.’

main thing is to stir it-helps breakdown easier-protein is another essential ingredient for bacterial to thrive–dry dog food is full of it-just add a few hand full in - raw food not good-its harmful bacteria void that if possible-the cardboard take about 6 months to break down completely no harm-more heat there is faster the decomposition-try covering it with plastic sheet

a good compost heap builds up heat, this is what breaks down the things you put in it, any type of vegetable scrap is good, not cooked , card board is thick and is hard to compost don t use it, un less you cut it up, paper is fine, as long as you make sure the print is made with soy oil or peanut oil, crush the egg shells , the smaller you make things the quicker it will compost, also add some shredded dried leaves, lawn clippings, coffee grounds, sterilized cow mature, moisture level needs to be constant not too wet or dry, adding some earth worm will speed up the process, if you cant get any green materials add 2 or 3 cups of nitrogen fertilizer in short any thing that will rot and does not contain hazardous material will do just remember the smaller the better, you can buy activators to speed up the process, and also keep the bin stirred up
